THE 2008

ULTIMATE CHALLENGE

MARCH 21st-22nd-23rd 2008

INFORMATION

Dear Prospective Competitor

Here it is, eventually! The letter you have been waiting for?

The event will start at 9.30am on Friday 21st March from the Castle Inn at Caldecote near Corby. On Thursday 29th March we will be on site between 4.00pm & 6.00pm to do signing on and scrutineering/safety checks and handing out of stickers etc.

Entry fee for this years event based on one vehicle with two team members will be £215, this includes road books, organisation, land fees, presentation buffet, trophies and event stickers

If this is not possible for you, then we will be on site on the morning of the 30th March from 7.00am but you should all be signed on stickered up and passed scrutineering by 9.00am ready for the briefing at 9.05am

There are a few camp sites close by and the Castle Inn has accomodation

The Castke Inn will be the base and focal point for the Challenge, each day will start and end on site and the Sunday presentation will be on site.

BREAKDOWNS: Nene Overland at Caistor & Ailsworth will be open over the weekend to provide spares and workshop facilities. Rockingham Land Rovers at Rockingham will also be open Friday and Saturday.

.

The camping facilities are very good with showers and toilets but please respect that the site owners have allowed us to use the site under the present wet conditions. Meaning no playing at power slides etc. on the grass or leaving the showers etc. like a mud pit! They have had this in the past and were unsure whether to allow us to use the site so I have had too make lots of promises to allow us to use this excellent site.

Food and refreshments for the whole event will be down to the individuals so make sure you have all you need for each day.

The briefing will describe the event scoring system, route, safety rules and introduce the key marshals. Road books will be handed out and the entrants will split into 3 groups of ? vehicles, we will do this as fairly as possible and respect the wishes of those who have asked to team up with friends.

The 3 groups will operate independently of one another and over the 3 days we hope to use 6-7 different sites as well as a few green lanes. This year we have some new and exciting terrain to use near Uppingham!! (never used before?) Yaxley!! & Corby!!

On each day a group will use sites that the other groups are not using, one group will leave heading north to start while another other group leave heading west, and finally another group head south, each group of 3 will operate on different routes and sites, a minimum of 2 sites per group per day will be used. On day two the groups will work on sites previously used the day before by another group, the start point for each day will be Sacrewell Mill campsite. Sunday again will see the teams start at the same point but again use different sites to the previous two days, before having to check in at The Castle Inn between 4.15pm and 4.30pm.

YOU WILL REQUIRE LANDRANGER MAPS 141, 142 , 152 & 130 and site locations will be given using OSGB grid references.

Bearing in mind that each group will have a minimum of 2 sites and perhaps one greenlane to operate on each day, planning, tactics and time management are required, you can do your daily site allocations in any order you as an individual wish?
Once you have arrived on
your chosen first competitive site with or without your group it is up to each individual team/vehicle how they go forward, you can decide to work as a group or go on as an individual.

However we do have some novices and people will have problems so please remember the team spirit side to the event.

Because you leave as a group does not mean you all have to book in as a group, we have given you a time period to check in.

Lateness or arriving early will mean a deduction of 100 points for every 5 minutes late, this is both for the start and end of each day.

PLEASE REMEMBER TIME MANAGEMENT IS IMPORTANT, IF A ROUTE IS THERE YOU DO NOT HAVE TO FINISH IT BEFORE YOU LEAVE TO HEAD BACK TO CLOCK IN, ANY OTHER TIME YOU STAY TO THE ROUTE

On arrival at some of the designated sites you will find a start point and a route marked out with posts and coloured markers with numbers on. YOU MUST FOLLOW THE MARKED OUT ROUTE EVENTUALLY you will arrive at a finish post where if you have completed all you want or can, you can leave the site and move on. If at the end of a day you find you have time to spare and you missed out some sections earlier in the day you can go back to a previously finished site BUT YOU MUST START AT THE STARTING GATE AND FOLLOW THE ROUTE TO THE SECTIONS YOU MISSED! Where there are taped routes or two posts with the same number on YOU MUST pass between the two posts.

IF YOUR ARE WORKING IN PAIRS OR GROUPS AT NO TIME ON ANY SITE IS ONE VEHICLE ALLOWED TO BYPASS OR GO OUT OF A MARKED OUT ROUTE TO ACT AS A GROUND ANCHOR FOR ANOTHER VEHICLE…THIS APPLIES TO F1 ONLY!

But you can bypass a difficult section (F2 competitors) or go past and come back (F1 competitors) via the marked out route to complete any section where someone is having trouble or there is likely to be a delay OR QUEING OCCURS. HOWEVER IF YOU OVERTAKE YOU CAN ONLY MISS OUT THE AREA WHERE THE HOLD UP IS, YOU MUST REJOIN THE COURSE AT THE NEAREST POINT.

EVERY SITE WILL HAVE AT LEAST TWO MARSHALS ON TO CHECK FOR FAIRPLAY AND SAFETY, POINTS WILL BE DEDUCTED FOR DANGEROUS DRIVING AND OBVIOUS CHEATING.

A few sites will have no route just a boundary which you must remain inside, you will be given the number of stamps and the points they are worth, you must find them yourselves! (Site information will be in the roadbook given out at the event)

The scoring system will take different forms, on some sites you will be given a route to follow and along that route will be placed stamps/seals on 3ft chains, these you have to collect onto your scorecard, this will be attached to your vehicle dashboard by a 1ft chain!

The stamps/seals will vary in points depending on difficulty and time taken to get. On one site THERE MAY? be a SPECIAL TASK where you can score bonus points, this will be observed by an instructor and you will be awarded points for initiative, planning, safety and execution of the task. Another site
will have a marked out trials driving course and again you will be awarded points for skill, safety, driving technique and distance achieved BEFORE STOPPING FOR 3 MINUTES OR MORE. In the case of a tiebreaker an optimum time for the section will be given and points awarded accordingly.

The trophies will be awarded to the top three in each group (F1 &F2) as a well as an overall Team Spirit award.

SPEED ON ROADS AND DANGEROUS DRIVING!
IF THIS HAPPENS ON THIS EVENT OR A MARSHALL SEE’S SOMEONE SPEEDING THEN THE AFFENDING VEHICLE/VEHICLES WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE THE EVENT AND BE BANNED FROM ALL FUTURE EVENTS RUN BY MYSELF.

Hopefully I have covered everything but if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours Sincerely

Vince Cobley
