Sample Course Itinerary

09:00 – Arrival & Technical Briefing
Clients arrive at the allocated centre for coffee and an introductory briefing covering the mechanical principles of 4×4 systems. Topics include:

  • Transmission wind‑up
  • How and why a differential works
  • Body roll and its effect on capability and stability
  • Suspension, vehicle loading and load security
  • Approach, departure and break‑over angles
  • Torque vs power and why the distinction matters off‑road
  • Vehicle positioning and land‑access considerations

09:40 – Pre‑Drive Checks
Move outside for the pre‑parade inspection and daily vehicle check schedule.

10:00 – Practical Demonstrations at the Off‑Road Site
Arrival at the off‑road area for demonstrations covering:

  • Differential function and behaviour
  • Vehicle controls, speed management, and gear selection
  • Look–Assess–Risk techniques
  • Handling issues associated with modern centre differentials and viscous‑coupling drivetrains
  • Demonstration of Terrain Response systems

10:15 – Client Driving Session: Fundamentals
Clients begin driving, focusing on:

  • When and where to use high and low range
  • Understanding torque in preference to power
  • Instructor assessment of driving style and confidence
Terrain includes climbs, descents, technical sections, and side slopes.

11:30 – Side Slopes, Stability & Ground Reading
Acclimatisation to side slopes and understanding how loading and speed affect stability.
Practical driving includes:

  • Controlled climbs and descents
  • Mud, ruts and ditch crossings
  • Development of “ground reading skills” — a core technique in safe and effective off‑road driving.

13:00 – Lunch

13:30 – Stage Two: Recovery Techniques
Training on the two safe recovery methods used during failed hill climbs:

  1. Stalling on a steep ascent
  2. Loss of traction resulting in a halt

13:55 – Ground Familiarisation Skills
Clients walk selected routes to identify the easiest and safest line for the vehicle.
This reinforces the principle that good reconnaissance can prevent unnecessary risk and save significant time.

14:25 – Ditch & Rut Crossing Techniques

14:40 – Independent Driving & Track Techniques
Clients drive previously covered areas with minimal instructor input, plus new routes including un‑driven mud and rutted tracks.
Instruction includes:

  • Safari‑style “track” driving
  • Body roll management
  • Corrective steering — when to apply it and when not to

15:20 – Wading Preparation & Water Crossing Techniques

15:35 – Final Appraisal
Opportunity for clients to request additional tuition in areas they feel less confident, alongside instructor‑identified development points.

16:00 – End of Course

Instructors Course

Instructors Course

For many years, Pro‑Trax chose not to offer instructor‑level training. Despite our extensive experience, we believed that becoming an off‑road instructor required more than simply being a highly skilled driver — it required a structured, professional pathway.

However, after working with individuals who had been “trained” elsewhere and discovering significant gaps in their knowledge, technique and safety standards, we made the decision to develop our own instructor programme. This ensures that those entering the industry receive training that reflects the professionalism, depth of knowledge and practical capability expected at Pro‑Trax.

Our reputation for high‑quality training led Land Rover to approach Vince Cobley in 1999 to become part of the newly formed Land Rover Experience network — a testament to the standards and methods that underpin our approach. Although Vince has since passed away, his legacy, methods and ethos continue to shape the way Pro‑Trax trains instructors today.

Our instructor course provides a strong foundation for anyone looking to enter the off‑road training industry. Many participants go on to work with established training centres, expedition companies, manufacturers and commercial operators. While we cannot guarantee employment, successful candidates often secure part‑time opportunities either with us or within the wider industry.
